how books can predict your future

‘I suggest that the only books that influence us are those for which we are ready, and which have gone a little further down our particular path than we have yet gone ourselves.’ -E.M. Forster

The ‘Time Hop’ on my FaceBook popped up the other day, and showed me a status update I posed back in 20011.  I wanted to start a podcast.  ‘I’m thinking….Podcast.’ was the status and it caught me off guard as I read it, because I typically think of myself as a ‘doer’.

You know… ‘A Doer’.  Some people talk and plan for things years, never really ‘doing’ anything.  Some people have a plan and get to work and then there are those of us who haphazardly throw all sense to the side and just begin ‘doing’ before they are even really prepared or ready.  That’s me!  I just get started and I seem to always figure it out along the way.  So the age of this post surprised me, mainly because my first podcast is being uploaded this week.   At the tail end of 2015.  Not in 2011, but over four years later!    What made the difference between then and now?

I have always heard, and often said to my kido, ‘look at your friends and I’ll show you your future!”.  What I didn’t realize is HOW deep this law permeates our lives.

Did you know:*

  • If your friend is obese you are 171% more likely to gain weight
  • If your friend is ending their marriage….. your chance of divorce increases by 75%
  • If you are hanging around friends who are constantly unhappy, your chance of being unhappy increases by 7%

Don’t believe me? Take your top 5 friends, the people you spend the most time with, add all their income and divide by 5.  Is that number YOUR income? Statistics say it is.

Who we surround ourselves determines our progress and who we are becoming.

I wanted to start a podcast, but I didn’t know anyone who had done one.  I really couldn’t figure out how to even get started and so it seemed a bit off limits to me.  It wasn’t until I got into circles with other people who HAD podcasts that I stopped and believed I could do it to.  Increasing my circle of influence over the past year, searching out people who are doing what I want to do and being a student of everything around me has made all the difference.

You may be thinking, I don’t have people around me who are already doing big things or I would be too!

I felt that same way until I started reading more books!  Specific books.  Books that opened up a world to me that I wanted to be in.  The books I chose predicted my future and the books I read today are doing the same.

I didn’t have the influences that I wanted around me at first and so I started reading. I listened to Audio books every time I got in the car, when I was getting ready in the morning and every chance I had.  Those books led me to research on the internet and soon I found a group of people who had come together to do the things I wanted to do.  I got involved in Facebook groups and masterminds. I tweeted people I wanted to be like and asked questions. The authors I enjoyed had coaching groups and I joined, meeting others and learning along the way.  Soon, I was able to find direction and belief that I could do the things I truly wanted to do.

If you don’t have the people around you that you need to step up your game, surround yourself with other influences that can open this door for you.  Read.  Listen to audiobooks.  Seek out informational Podcasts.
