It's been 24 months since I last got my hair color

It's been 24 months since I last got my hair colored.
A controversial decision, I found!

Men get distinguished with gray but women get older looking.

Men look handsome and women look like grandmas.

Meh… I decided that didn’t make sense.

Continuing to dye my hair blonde aged me and looked so fake.

And I don’t really mind looking older… I AM older.
And I am so much happier here, at this age (in my 50’s), than I was in my 20’s or 30’s.

It's not as silver gray as I thought it would be and sometimes I buy into the stereotype and wonder about the blonde version of me, but in the end my hair is SO MUCH healthier and softer... and so totally worth it!

If you’re thinking of growing out your gray here are my tips:
➡️Kristina Ess purple shampoo from target is awesome and can help blend things especially if you have fake blonde on the ends
➡️Get a clear gloss at the salon to help it stay shiny during the grow out
➡️ Take photos along the way of the grow out so you can compare. it won't feel like it's growing at all during that first year or so then it happens fast!
➡️ Regular trims help it stay healthy looking and will make you feel progress as more fake color is chopped off
➡️ Use the money you save to buy yourself something you'd never normally purchase ( I bought myself a dyson airwrap after the final chop and decided on that a year before)

Tonight as I prepped for the week I started thinking of things that make my life so simple.
I guess it was gratitude, but almost more than that.
An acknowledgement.
Acknowledgment that so many things in my life are simple, even if at times I think it’s stressful and frustrating.

I thought about how I went to an elementary school where I always felt safe. It’s easy for me to get access to tampons. (Some people really don’t. Google it.) I have shoes that fit and are in good shape. I can walk to a store that is a giant warehouse full of most any kind of food I could imagine (grocery stores are 🤯) and I never need to check my account before I go. I can go to the doctor when I want to. I have the ability to unlearn things that I once learned. (Like how we don’t have to put two spaces between sentences anymore.)

Most of those things… all of those things… are BIG deals. Huge things that changed the way I experience and interact with the world.

Are there things I want.
Yes.
Things I’d like to be different?
Sure.
But in the end, my life is insanely simple.

Noticing these little things we so often take for granted help me remember, and when I remember I get in the feeling of it… and when I’m in the feeling of it, my brain automatically starts scanning for more. Then it always feels like I’m winning and I start to notice more winning.

It works the opposite way too.

I went to coco cay, Royal Caribbean’s private is

I went to coco cay, Royal Caribbean’s private island, long before it was developed.
In fact, when I went, it was just a piece of land, a little island, where they had resurrected some makeshift porticos and had dragged grills underneath to serve the endless amounts of food cruise ship vacations promise.

When we walked off the boat, they handed each passenger a raft and a snorkel mask and I had one of the best days of my life playing in the water.
My first time in the Caribbean.

It was undeveloped.
Nothing like it is today.
I haven’t been there since they’ve installed water slides, restaurants and sturdy beach chairs.

I’m sure it’s fun now, but in a different way than it was then.

Sometimes we think…. “When we get it just right it will be SOO great”!

And it can be.

But it also can be really special in the building phase. Before you know what will be erected and developed.

When it’s just in the ethers, you can be in the imagination of the thing. The excitement.

I’ve heard Coco Cay updated again in 2018. They divided the island in half. The “thrill” side with water towers and pools and a “chill” side with chairs and hammocks. The chill side is what I imagine I experienced there so many years ago.

I know we hear it all the time… it’s the journey.
But I started thinking this morning, what if that’s ALL it is.

That there never is a final destination.
We’re always changing and learning and creating the “thrills” and the “chills” and in the end, the adventure of going back between the two should be what all the fuss is about.
