It's not what your thinking ... it's what you're not thinking about.
Most of our actions and thoughts are unconscious. This means they run on autopilot so we don’t have to be consciously aware of them.
It serves us.
I know I don’t want to have to watch a YouTube video every time I want to brush my teeth. I’ve learned how and now it’s a habit. I don’t think about it. In fact, sometimes I have to feel my toothbrush to be sure I’ve used it because I can’t remember!
It’s a habit. Unconscious. A pattern.

We have patterns like this for everything that just run under the radar of our consciousness.
Patterns around money and income.
Patterns around decisions.
Patterns around responses and conversations and even patterns around relationships.
⁣
We don’t think about it. We just do it.
⁣
So what’s the problem?
⁣
People reach out to me every day with something they don’t like about their life. They have tried lots of things but the outcome, their reality, still is showing them something that they don’t want.
⁣
Why is that?
They are consciously aware they want to change.
They do things to shift their behavior.
They read books, listen to podcasts.
Heck, they may have even gotten therapy so they are hyper-aware of the pattern.
⁣
So why don’t things change?
⁣
Because the pattern isn’t something they are thinking about.
It’s unconscious. Under the surface of their conscious awareness.
⁣
So the moment they aren’t consciously focused on it, the unconscious takes over.
And if our unconscious is 95% of what we do, then it would make good sense that the unconscious is actually the thing that is tripping them up.
⁣
It’s not their lack of willpower.
Or lack of motivation.
⁣
It’s literally their unconscious patterns that are designed to make things easier that are tripping them up.
⁣
So how do we change these unconscious patterns?
There are three main ways:
1. A highly emotional event.
2. Repetition.
3. Rewiring using something like NLP or Hypnosis.

This seems like the best option for me, I don’t want things to take forever and I definitely don’t want to experience something super emotional to change!

It doesn’t take 21 days to create a habit.

I hear people say this all the time and it’s not true.
⁣
In fact, it limits us.
⁣
When I was young I remember helping my mom in the laundry room. I was sitting on the top of the dryer and she was ironing. I reached over the iron to grab something and my arm touched the edge of that hot iron. Never again did I reach over the iron. I have a habit of being extra careful near a hot iron, even to this day.
Didn’t take me 21 days of getting my arm cooked to get that habit!

Repetition can create a habit, sure, if you’ve got loads of time to wait, you can do it that way.
⁣
But what if the things that were important could become habits instantly?
⁣
Or you could break a habit just as fast?
⁣
A few weeks ago I was at some training in Philly and I realized while I was there that I had a habit of eating those Werther’s hard candies. Not just one or two... I had them in my bag and I was eating a lot of them!
I decided that it didn’t serve me so I did a 30 second NLP process so that I don’t like Werther’s and I haven’t even wanted one since. (In fact, they make me feel nauseous just typing this!)

Just like that.
Not a lot of back and forth and pain and effort. I certainly didn’t have to suffer for 21 days.

We’ve been told a lot of things about a LOT of things. But what if a lot of it isn’t even true?

We can carry so much of our past around with us, it can be hard to build a few future.
When our arms are full of struggle and disappointment, it becomes our focus.
The heaviness and weight of carrying around what's no longer necessary consumes us. Slows us down. Keeps us from our purpose here on this journey.
When we no longer fear the past and learn how to release it, our opportunities expand and we can see a vision for ourselves that we could not see before.
It is hard to grasp onto something new when our arms are full of something old.I believe a lot of people avoid thinking about their painful past because they think if they ignore it, then it will go away. They don’t seek out help to release it because they won’t want to relive it or feel those emotions ever again.
So instead it settles.
It gets in the nooks and crannies of our mind and shows itself when we want to expand into something new.
Keeping us here, because the fear of going “there” may expose some of the pain or hurt.

So we hide.
But underneath is that feeling that there is something more. Something bigger out there waiting for us.
If only we knew how to reach it.
⁣
Some of the most important work I do is releasing negative emotions.
You don’t need to relive the emotion in order to heal it.
And when you release it, and your arms are free for something more, your energy increases and you begin to feel joy and purpose again.
